Whether you're
At home on the weekend, relaxing after a day of adventures, or travelling to a new destination, you’re bound to get bored. So what do you do? If you’re like me, you get fidgety and start moving your hands and tapping your feet. That usually lasts for a while, until you start annoying those around you and eventually they want nothing to do with you. You can listen to music, but your battery will eventually run out.
You can always read
When you have a good book, you can get
lost for hours. To spur you along in your adventures, I’d suggest Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman. It’s a biography of Yvon Chouinard (legendary climber, soul-surfer, founder and co-owner of Patagonia, Inc.), history of
Patagonia, Inc., and discusses the philosophy of co-existing with our environment, all wrapped into one book.
Some books
Are an easy weekend read, but I’d recommend
taking your time with this one. There might be some terms thrown out there that
aren’t familiar to you. The best way to get the most out of the book would be
to look up those terms to gain a better understanding, because you’ll probably
see them again later-on.
It’s a great look at a guy who’s constantly aware of what’s
going on around him. He’s able to see the small things that us humans are doing
that are actually killing the environment. When you read it, you may feel
awful, but he’s always able to turn it around by providing small solutions to
help offset those actions.
I enjoyed
Reading about his adventures the most.
The way he first came across climbing, to how he helped initiate
“clean climbing,” to how he funded his surf trips. He’s always been able to
find adventure while helping others and the environment.
I was never a big fan of Patagonia, Inc.
Because of their
expensive clothing. Reading the book helped me understand why those items
are high priced. Now, I have no problem paying for an expensive clothing item
because I know the quality of it and that no unnecessary harm was done to the
environment to make it.
Chouinard is definitely one of those guys that
walks-the-walk and talks-the-talk. Not to mention, he always does what he says
he’s going to do. In my opinion, we need more people like Yvon Chouinard.
What are your plans this weekend?
During your adventures this weekend, I hope you're planning to avoid doing any unnecessary harm to the environment. Here’s an idea: when you order your copy of Let My People Go Surfing, choose Standard Shipping. I know you really want to get your copy ASAP, but you could be preventing one less truck on the road, polluting the air with its exhaust and one less airplane in the air, guzzling down jet fuel.
